Standing In Line is the story of the Great War, but specifically about soldier Albert Scrimshaw, who died at Passendale and was the great-uncle of the show’s writer, Lester Simpson.  Originally commissioned by Peace Concerts Passendale, it was premiered in 2003 at Passendale Church in Belgium.  Peace Concerts Passendale was founded by individuals and organisations from the Passendale area of Flanders in 1992.  Each year they sponsor a series of productions and exhibitions drawing on the events of the Great War in the Passchendaele area of Flanders in the hope that they will never be repeated elsewhere.

Standing in Line is centred around Lester’s songs as well as including songs from the time. The narration includes poems of Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Rudyard Kipling and the widely acclaimed performance, co-written with Piet Chielans is accompanied by a series of projected images.

Albert Scrimshaw was born in 1885 in Eastwell, Leicestershire, worked as a butler near Oxford and married a girl from Windley, Derbyshire.  He joined the "Ox and Bucks" regiment and marched off to war, never to return.  His widow Annie lived in Duffield, Derbyshire, until her death in the 1970s.

ArtERY Live Manager said:  “This is a moving, well performed tribute to an ordinary man who fell in the Great War.  The show has been very well received and we are sure that ArtERY Live audiences will enjoy the brilliant music and poetry as well as the excellent performances.”
